At 15m tall the Kaledonia Waterfalls (sometimes referred to as the Caledonia Waterfalls or Caledonian Waterfalls) in the Troodos Mountains are the highest Cyprus waterfalls. The Kyros Potamos stream, alongside which the Kaledonia trail follows to the Kaledonia Waterfalls, is one of the few streams on Cyprus that continues to flow all year round, the water from the stream provides the water supply for the Troodos.
The Walking Trail to the Highest Cyprus Waterfalls
The Kaledonia Trail to the Kaledonia Waterfalls, the highest Cyprus waterfalls starts at the Psilo Dendro trout farm on the outskirts of Plano Platres. For a short distance the trail follows a broad tarmac path to the left of the trout farm and restaurant. After a few hundred meters this dwindles to a narrow, but well marked path. The stony path climbs then steadily, frequently crossing and re-crossing the Kyros Potamos Stream. The river valley is full of luxuriant vegetation providing for a pleasantly shaded walk.The highest Cyprus waterfalls are reached after about 30 to 45 minutes walking.From the Kaledonia Waterfalls the walker has several options, the trail may of course be simply retraced to the starting point. For those looking for a circular walk, or for a return on an easier less stony path the forest roads may be followed back to the trout farm.
From the Kaledonia Waterfalls continue uphill for a short distance, the trail forks and the nature trail continues to the right. Go to the left following the sign that says "escape route." The trail follows the contour of the hillside before reaching the forest road. Follow the forest road downhill, there is one fork in the road to be negotiated, turn left here, the road is signed "Plano Platres 2km, 30 minutes." Continue straight on until the roof of the trout farm can be seen, at which point follow take the left turning to return to the trout farm, restaurant and car park.
A Longer Trail to the Kaledonia Falls, the Highest Cyprus Waterfalls
For a longer walk from the Kaledonia Waterfalls the Kaledonia Trail may be followed for a further 3km continuing upstream from the Kaledonia Waterfalla alongside the Kyros Potamos stream towards Troodos Square and return from Troodos Square return to Plano Platres via Pouzaris Mountain
It is also possible to leave the car in Plano Platres, take the once daily bus to Troodos Square and walk back to Plano Platres along the Kaledonia trail.
Access to the Kaledonia Nature Trail and the Highest Cyprus Waterfalls at the Centre of the Troodos Mountains
The Kaledonia Trail is situated at the heart of the Troodos Mountains of Cyprus.
The route commences at the Psilo Dendro Trout Farm about 1km. from the centre of Plano Platres.
Plano Platres is easily reached by car and if on holiday on Cyprus with a rental car this could easily be done as a day trip from Paphos or Limassol. Plano Platres also has a daily bus service from Paphos
Refreshments and public toilets are available in Plano Platres.
When to Walk on Cyprus for the Best Conditions
The area is best explored in Spring, Summer or Autumn. The route should be avoided in times of heavy rain.
As with all walks on Cyprus, it is imperative that whatever time of year the highest Cyprus waterfalls are enjoyed adequate water must be carried.
