This is a demanding multi day walk in Mt Aspiring and Fiordland National Parks on New Zealand's beautiful south island
The hike begins from the Routeburn shelter which is situated in Mt Aspiring National Park. This is a tough hike which will take the best part of three days for those with a good level of fitness to complete. It covers a distance of just over 32 kilometres with a climb of 1277 meters at its highest point which crosses Harris Saddle. This is a popular trek with an easy to follow path in good conditions. The Department of Conservation (DOC) provides accommodation in the form of pre-booked or ticket allocated huts, although camping is permitted. Conserving the EnvironmentPrior to undertaking this hike it is important to visit the local DOC office. This is located in the nearest town to the start of the trek which is Glenorchy. The DOC provides up to date weather forecasts, information on track conditions, trip intention forms and hut tickets for those who have not booked in advance. The DOC office also doubles as a visitors centre and seeks to promote the areas diverse environmental and historical background. There is also a local store in Glenorchy from where transport to the start of the trek as well as a pick up at the end can be booked. Basic supplies can be purchased here although it is expensive. Stunning Scenery and Native WildlifeMuch of the walk at a lower level is through a canopy of red and silver beech trees where a variety of fungi, mosses and native ferns grow. After breaking through the bush line on the second day visibility greatly improves. The trek reaches its highest point with the hike over Harris Saddle. This is also where you are most likely to encounter kea the native alpine parrot. Giant buttercups and flowering spaniards provide flashes of colour in and amongst the tussock grass. There is also an interesting side trip from Harris Saddle with the climb up Conical Hill. Luckily there is a small shelter where backpacks can be stored prior to the climb. This can be dangerous in bad weather but the panoramic views from the summit are stunning and the trip can be completed in about an hour. Having reached the high point of the trek crossing Harris Saddle the remainder of the hike becomes markedly easier. Preparation and ProvisionsIt is important to note that everyone undertaking this trek is responsible for and is expected to carry all the required provisions. There are no shops. This will include sufficient food to last the duration, a sleeping bag, change of clothing as well as personal hygiene items, cooking stove and utensils. The correct foot ware and outdoor clothes are essential as is a map and compass. During the summer season the huts are staffed by wardens. These dedicated volunteers maintain the huts, including gas cookers as well as providing up to date weather forecasts and details of track conditions. However this is not the case out of season and there are no cooking and heating facilities provided either during this time. Fresh water and basic sanitary facilities are however provided all year round.
