This park has opportunities for hiking, fishing, and picnicking for the whole family.

Lair O’ the Bear Park, which is run by Jefferson County Open Space, is close to Denver, yet is also far enough away from the metro area in the foothills. It has plenty of opportunities for individual hikers, as well as families looking to spend a day outdoors.

How to Get to Lair O’ the Bear Park

In order to get to the park, drive south on C-470 until reaching Morrison. Exit here, and drive west on Highway 74. The road goes through Morrison, and continues up through a winding canyon, with Bear Creek flowing off the left side. The entrance to the park will be on the left.

Things to Do at Lair O’ the Bear Park

The park has facilities for all kinds of outdoor enthusiasts, including:

  • Hiking trails
  • Multi-use trails for hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders.
  • Picnic tables
  • A covered pavilion with a fireplace.
  • Toilet facilities with handicap access.
  • Drinking water access.
  • Fishing access.

Hiking the Bruin Bluff Trail

The Bruin Bluff Trail is a loop trail that has views of the park and road below. From the parking lot, begin walking along the Creekside Trail, which has pullouts for admiring the creek. Continue on the Creekside Trail until reaching a footbridge on the left side. Cross the bridge, and bear right onto the Bruin Bluff Trail.

The trail climbs away from the creek into the hillside. Yucca plants line either side of the trail, which give way to Ponderosa pine trees. The trail follows the hill east for over a mile, winding its way back and forth along the contour. Before it descends back down towards the creek, the trail passes through a rock notch, which has a great view of the park below.

Continue hiking the Bruin Bluff Trail until it reaches the Ouzel Bridge. Here there is a large beaver dam that crosses the creek. The covered pavilion is on the other side of the creek. Hike the Bear Creek Trail back to the parking lot.

When hiking the trail be aware that it is a multi-use trail, with both mountain bikers, hikers, and horseback riders commonly using the trail. Also, there are signs indicating areas that are under environmental restoration. Follow their instructions, and stay on designated trails.
