Blackrock Summit, in Shenandoah National Park, is the destination of a short, scenic hike that connects to America's Appalachian Trail.

Hikers, geocachers, and photographers should be sure to schedule a visit to scenic Blackrock Summit. This trail features a relatively easy but rewarding hike for outdoor enthusiasts of all types. Although this is a short hike, about half an hour each way, the trail is steep at the beginning.

Find Blacklick Summit along the Appalachian Trail

The trail to Blackrock Summit is located on the west side of Skyline Drive, intersecting the Appalachian Trail. Hikers approaching by car should park in the lot on the west side of the drive, just north of mile post 85. Since it is in the Shenandoah National Forest, visitors must purchase a pass from the ranger station when they drive into the park. A day pass costs $10, and a $20 pass allows access for a year.

Be Prepared with Proper Hiking Gear

Hiking boots are recommended, but sturdy athletic shoes will do. The trail is rough and rocky in many places. In summer, deer ticks are prevalent, so hikers should wear long pants tucked into socks, gaiters, or knee-length socks. Although the trail begins in a wooded area, the summit is open, making hats advisable for visitors. Polarized sunglasses will enhance viewing at the top as well as wildlife spotting along the way.

Wildlife Along the Way

Honeybees, bumblebees, and butterflies are abundant along the way. Hikers may also encounter whitetail deer. Visitors should be alert for possible sightings of black bear, cougars, and copperhead snakes.

At the Summit

The rock formation at Blackrock Summit is a talus, or pile of rocks that have been pushed up by geological forces, forming a tumble of blocky, dark granite boulders. Although hikers may be tempted to climb up the rocks, this is not encouraged, as talus rocks may shift and slide.

View the Shenandoah Valley

Photographers could scarcely wish for a more spectacular view. From the lookout point, visitors gaze out over the Shenandoah Valley to the Allegheny Mountains along the West Virginia Border.

Great Geocache Along the Way

Geocachers can visit a clever cache along this trail. Although it is not as accessible as many caches, it is found regularly and makes a good stopping place for travel bugs. GPS users should note that coordinates may be amiss under heavy tree cover along the trail. (As of September 2008, this cache has been archived.)

Top Hike in Appalachia

In addition to abundant wildlife and natural, wooded beauty along the trail, Blackrock Summit has an elevation of 3,092 ft., providing an awe-inspiring view of the surrounding valley and mountain ranges. This short hike provides visitors with many opportunities for outdoor enjoyment.
